Poor academic performance is a serious problem in the United States. According to U. S. Department of Education, most students reading and math performances were below proficiency level after four-year public schooling. More and more time and resources have been spent on mathematics and science subjects to increase students performances on standardized tests. Very often, budget restrictions and students poor academic ability have been used as the primary reasons for cutting other areas such as physical education. To justify the important roles that physical activity (PA) and physical education play in school academic, researchers have put forth great efforts to examine the relation between PA amount and academic achievement and cognition. The 2008 Physical Activity Guidelines Advisory Committee Report has also recommended that research be conducted that critically evaluates the extent to which PA affects classroom behavior and achievement in children and adolescents.A group of 1364 3rd graders were recruited as study subjects to investigate the relations between PA and academic performance via the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development Early Child Care Research Network. In this project, we use regression methods as tools to study potential effects of PA on academic performance.Data source: please find Lab3data.Rdata. The variables in the dataset are:(The missing data (N/A) can be obtained by taking the average or using the Regression function method).â SITE: Data collection regionsâ CSEX: Genderâ CRACE: Race (White, Black, Hispanic, Asian, and other)â INCNTMG3: Family income-to-needs ratio (family pre-tax income divided by the poverty threshold for a household)â BMIPG3: Body Mass Index (BMI)â MMVPACG3: âMinutes of daily moderate-to-vigorous physical activity (MVPA)â WJPCSCG3: Test score for letter-word identificationâ WJCLSCG3: Test score for calculationâ WJAPSCG3: Test score for applied problemsGoal:Use this dataset to investigate the effects of MVPA on three academic performance measuresSuggested study directions:â Use graphical methods to study the relationships between recored variables.Use statistical summaries and graphical techniques to support your statements.â Are there any missing observations? If so, how should we deal with them?â Using multiple linear regressions to explore the relationship between academic performance measures and MVPA.â If we only use data with MVPA < 150 minutes in our multiple linear regression study, what do we findâ? How about only using data with MVPA ? 150, what happens? What do you think?â Does it make sense to fit nonlinear functions of MVPA in this case?â What are the roles those controlling variables, SITE, CSEX, CRACE, and INCNTMG3, play in this study? How important are they?
